Here is where the dog training analogy comes to an end because remember, I am teaching children for a living, not dogs. By tracking learning base on the learning targets you can quickly and accurately determine when a student needs more help and a specific target, when they are ready to move on and if there may be a connection between what they have achieved and their habits of learning. Patterns mean something and looking at patterns through tracking achievement and habits of learning allows teachers to target a child's needs. There could be circumstances regarding a pattern of poor habits of learning. These circumstances can be addressed and targeted. Maybe the student has little access to a computer, or is tired all the time. These can effect habits of learning which can in turn effect achievement. Which makes a wonderful case as to why both should be reported separately, not just because it is unfair to punish a kid for achievement because their dog at their homework.
